On a recent trip to California, John Gosselin, CEO of Earn More Do Less (EMDL) and Co-founder of Showroom Marketing planned to visit a new showroom client, Deluxe Vanity Kitchen in Van-Nuys, California.

Seconds after walking in the door, John noticed a National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) membership certificate. He then asked the team, “Hey, when was the last time you attended an NKBA event?” The answer came as a surprise: “We’ve never attended an event, despite being members for seven years.”

Ironically, there was an NKBA Chapter meeting scheduled for the following evening. John suggested the team at Deluxe Vanity attend with him. So, off to the meeting they went. Roy, Co-owner of Deluxe Vanity was blown away by the experience. There were about 20 interior designers, several builders, and many suppliers of materials who attended the meeting whom Roy and the Deluxe Vanity team had never met before.

After listening to the guest speaker, Christopher, highly-sought-after architect and designer in the Los Angeles area, Roy and John were excited to employ some of the strategies on managing workflows, minimizing the “misery” that many homeowners experience during home renovations and remodels, and how to get the most out of each job for Deluxe Vanity.

Here are the tips that John and Roy learned:

  • Act as a homeowners “therapist” during ALL phases of a home remodeling project
  • Explain change orders WITH your contractor
  • Compliment a contractor’s work because they will want to buy from you if done right
  • Clients often think contractors are designers—they’re absolutely not
  • Enter your projects into competitions and always ask for a review of their experience

In closing, getting involved in local associations and chapters of national organizations is a strategy that will certainly set you on the right track for meeting the right people, getting referrals, and becoming an expert in the area in which you serve.

So, Roy and the rest of the team at Deluxe Vanity, we hope this event serves as a catalyst for you to take involvement in the local design community to new heights in 2020, and beyond!

To higher profits, and beyond they go!

P.S. – Austin Pike, co-founder of ShowroomMarketing.com has spent significant time working with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and was honored as a top performer through their 30 Under 30 program back in 2017.  Our team highly suggests aligning with associations like NKBA, KBIS, NAHB, NARI, ASID, the DPHA, and more if being considered a “real player” in your area among the experts in the design community.
